Why I Ditched Plastisol for Water Based Ink

Posted by on

When it comes to screen printing, the type of ink you use matters — not just for the look and feel of the design, but for your health and the environment.

Plastisol ink, the traditional choice, can contain plasticizers like phthalates, which have been linked to health concerns. Cleanup requires harsh solvents, and improper disposal of leftover ink and chemicals can harm the environment.

Water-based ink, on the other hand, is non-toxic, eco-friendly, and easy to clean with just water. It has lower VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions, making it safer for both the printer and the planet. By choosing water-based inks, we can create soft, high-quality prints while reducing our environmental footprint.

I've used both types, but I committed to using water-based inks over 10 years ago. Even though water based ink is a bit trickier and pricier than plastisol, in my studio, I prioritize screen printing with water-based inks because it allows me to make beautiful, wearable art that’s less toxic and more environmentally friendly.
